NetFlow

A network protocol for collecting IP traffic flow data, used for bandwidth monitoring and congestion analysis.

Back to Glossary

Definition

NetFlow is a network protocol originally developed by Cisco for collecting IP traffic flow data from routers and switches. It captures who is talking to whom, on which protocols, in which volumes, without inspecting packet contents. NetFlow is the foundation of bandwidth monitoring, congestion analysis, top-talker identification, and capacity planning. VEMIO™ Professional and Command tiers use NetFlow to give operators visibility into traffic patterns and bottlenecks across the monitored infrastructure.
